A Houston father was in jail Wednesday after being accused of causing his baby daughter to suffer third-degree burns by leaving her in a bath filled with scalding hot water.
Walter Lee Cockerham, 25, was charged with injury to a child after his three-month-old daughter suffered second and third-degree burns to more than 40 percent of her body last Thursday.
Cockerham told investigators he had burned his daughter mistakenly when he left to answer a knock at his door while the hot water was running into the tub.
Authorities said Cockerham was negligent. He had also been wanted in connection to an aggravated robbery back in February. Cockerham is being held without bond, because of the pending robbery case.
Additional reports indicate that the baby is recovering at Shriner’s Hospital in Galveston where doctors say that she will require extensive reconstructive surgery.
