A Texas judge jailed 11th-grade honor student, Diane Tran, for missing too much school. The judge order Tran to spend 24 hours in jail and pay a $100 fine. The judge admitted that he wanted to make an example out of Tran.
“If you let one (truant student) run loose, what are you do with the rest of’em?” asked Judge Moriarty.
Tran has a full-time job, a part-time job and takes advanced placement and dual credit college level courses. Her parents divorced and both moved away leaving her in Willis.
Willis High School posts the state truancy law on its website. “Texas law is clear that children must attend school.” Students can only have 10 unexcused absences in a six-month period before the school files a complaint in court.
