There’s a proposal in front of the state board that’s causing an uproar. One side is saying the Confederate flag is a symbol of Southern pride and the other says it’s a symbol of racism.
Frank Johnson, a member of Sons of Confederate Veterans — the organization that proposed the plate said, “Our whole purpose is just to keep the heritage of our ancestors alive.” Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee said, “The Confederate flag is a symbol of oppression, the brutality of slavery and it is a symbol of fear and intimidation.”
The Wall Street Journal reported that the Sons of Confederate Veterans would file a lawsuit to allow the plate if the TxDMV votes it down.
Nine states currently offer a specialty plate featuring the Confederate flag.
