Students at Texas Southern University held a private vigil for Joshua McMackle Sunday, a day after the freshman was gunned down at an off-campus party.

McMackle was one of more than 200 people gathered at the party early Saturday morning in the 3700 block of Wheeler when police said an unknown gunman opened fire into the crowd.

Investigators believe about 10 shots were fired.

One of those bullets hit McMackle in the back.

Police said the 18-year-old Virginia native stumbled to a nearby yard and later died at the hospital.

Another person at the party was shot in the ankle.

“There were just, like, massive amounts of people running through the streets, taking cover behind cars,” witness Austin Seipp said. “People were just, like, running in fear.”

McMackle’s classmates described him as well-liked and kind.

“Easy-going guy. He was to himself – always had an iPod in his ear,” student Joshua Williams, who lived down the hall from McMackle in the dorms last semester, said.

“It’s a shock to everybody. Everybody can’t believe that he got shot out of everybody else, because he didn’t mess with anybody,” Williams added.
