Barack Obama & Joe Biden

President Barack Obama on Monday reportedly gave Vice President Joe Biden his seal of approval to run for president in 2016, a senior Democrat tells CNN.

Biden hasn’t yet announced his candidacy, but news of a possible run has been swirling in the Election 2016 world. His office, however, has remained mum.

From CNN:

But that’s if Biden chooses to run — the decision is his. While he doesn’t need the President’s permission, of course, a potential presidential candidacy was among the topics of their lunch Monday at the White House. The President made clear he would not stand in his way or counsel him against a run, the senior Democrat said.

“Sources continue to speculate about something they know nothing about,” Biden spokeswoman Kendra Barkoff said. “This lunch was a private meeting between two people — the President and the Vice President.”

The news comes after speculation all summer about a potential bid by the vice president as Republicans have assailed Democratic frontrunner Hillary Clinton over her handling of emails while serving as secretary of state. And with Obama’s blessing, maybe all the talk is real.
