The Rockets reached an agreement with free agent center Erick Dampier on a one-year contract on Friday, a person familiar with the deal said.

Dampier, 35, averaged six points and 7.3 rebounds for Dallas last season, his 14th. He was traded to the Charlotte Bobcats for center Tyson Chandler in a cost-cutting move for the Bobcats. With the final season of Dampier’s contract — worth $13 million — non-guaranteed, the Bobcats waived Dampier last month.

Dampier had met with Rockets coach Rick Adelman in September, with the Rockets hoping to add him to the mix at center with Yao Ming and Brad Miller.

Dampier spent more than a month considering his options, but was close to choosing the Rockets since Tuesday before coming to terms with the Rockets Friday afternoon.

The Rockets are expected to move second-year guard Jermaine Taylor to make room on the roster for Dampier. Taylor did not play in either of the first two games this season and only sparingly in the preseason. The deals are not expected to be completed for several days.
