The worst call in Texans history and what should be considered one of the worst calls in NFL history contributed to one of the most disappointing defeats in Texans’ history.

In a must-win game for the Texans — a game in which they lost Matt Schaub to a shoulder injury before he returned for what could have been a comeback for the ages — the Texans trailed 23-12 early in the fourth quarter.

They had first-and-goal at the Jacksonville 5. For some reason, coach Gary Kubiak and offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan thought running back Chris Brown could throw a touchdown pass.

Brown, who fumbled into the end zone on the Texans’ last play of the first Jacksonville game, took a pitch from Schaub going to his right. He wanted to throw to Joel Dreessen in the back of the end zone. Brown was hit as he released the ball, and strong safety Gerald Alexander intercepted at the 2.

When Schaub threw a 1-yard touchdown pass to Andre Johnson to make it 23-18, Brown’s interception was even more important.

After Schaub’s touchdown pass to Johnson and the failed two-point conversion, the Jaguars got the ball back with 3:57 left. The Texans had three timeouts. They couldn’t force a punt.

With Maurice Jones-Drew running over them like a truck, the Texans went down meekly and suffered their fourth consecutive loss to a division opponent.
