Via KHOU.com:

A 50-year-old Houston woman is facing a charge of intoxication manslaughter after she drove her SUV into a bus stop Wednesday, killing a father and injuring his baby, police said.

Police said Brenda Gail Johnson was intoxicated, possibly on prescription medications, when she plowed into a bus stop on West Little York around 9 a.m. and killed 31-year-old Theodore Jones.

Jones was at the stop with his pregnant wife and 7-month-old son, Seth, headed to a doctor’s appointment.

Jones’ wife Megan says he pushed Seth’s baby carriage out of the way of the oncoming vehicle.

“I basically see the whole thing over and over, so I remember the whole thing,” said Jones. “I saw the car coming and I told him to move our child out of the way so he was in the process of moving my child away.”

The SUV hit Jones and clipped the stroller. Jones was pronounced dead at the scene. His son was taken to the hospital in stable condition with a broken arm.

“My husband is just that great. He would put his life above others,” she said. “At first I was hysterical, but right now I keep my mind on the Lord. He’s keeping me.”

By Mary Fairchild for About.com

Many Christians choose not to observe Halloween. As one of the most popular holidays in our culture—for some more celebrated than Christmas—it can present a challenge for Christian families, especially when children are involved. Although I won’t discuss here all the “whys” and “why nots,” and what the Bible says about Halloween, I will offer some fun and practical alternatives to enjoy this year with your family.

Instead of focusing on the negative aspects of Halloween, you can turn the holiday into a positive, relationship-building tradition for your family. These ideas offer alternatives to the customary Halloween activities. They are simple suggestions to start you thinking and planning. Add your own creativity and there’s no limit to the possibilities for family fun!

Fall Festival or Harvest Party

Offering a harvest party has been a popular Halloween alternative among Christian churches for years. A Fall Carnival or Harvest Festival adds a slightly new twist to this Christian alternative to the customary Halloween activities. Organizing an event at your church gives children and parents a place to go and benefit from celebrating together with other families. Bible theme costumes offer an endless source of amusing choices. A new variation to this old idea is to create a carnival atmosphere. With some well-thought-out planning, you can involve various established small groups from within your church to host carnival booths. Each group can creatively choose a theme, such as a “hoola-hoop” contest, or a gourd toss, providing a carnival midway of entertaining games. Craft booths and creative prizes can also be incorporated. You better get started now! For more ideas visit AmazingMoms.com.

Youth Pumpkin Patch Fun-Raiser

Instead of the usual youth car wash fund raiser, why not plan something totally different this year to raise money for the youth winter camp? Consider helping the youth group of your church organize a pumpkin patch and create an exciting Christian alternative to Halloween. The church youth can sell the pumpkins and the profits can go toward funding their next youth camp. To pump up the interest level, more pumpkin related activities can be incorporated, such as a pumpkin carving contest, a pumpkin cook-off, a carving demonstration, or even a pumpkin bake sale. Another option could be to organize the pumpkin patch project with your neighbors instead. One family might even sponsor such an event on a small scale in your own neighborhood as an alternative to trick-or-treating.

Family Pumpkin Carving

For a more subdued Christian alternative to Halloween, you might consider planning a family pumpkin carving project. This would be a more personal time of fellowship with the members of your family. Conclude the festivities by partaking in a slice of homemade pumpkin pie! Remember, family traditions don’t have to be gigantic, just memorable.

Fall Decorating

Another suggestion for a less adventurous Halloween alternative would be to plan a fall decorating event with your family. The changing season inspires just the right atmosphere for this occasion, and it becomes both meaningful and memorable to include the whole family in the process. For some great suggestions, check out these fall decorating ideas.

Our great friends over at KHOU.com has been covering ways to prevent bullying in our community.

As Houston-area school districts tackle the issue of bullies in schools, a growing number of parents have turned to new tactics to protect their children.

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu instructor Marcos Cerqueira, of the Heights Jiu-Jitsu Club, said the number of parents that approach him because their children had been picked on in school has grown in recent years.

“Every day, more and more, I get e-mails from families [telling me], ‘I would like to sign up my kid for a class because　I want him to　learn how to defend himself,’” Cerqueira, said.

Cerqueira, who teaches children the martial art in the Houston Heights and near Meyerland, said his students learn how to strengthen their minds so they don’t have to use their hands.

“They don’t learn how to fight,” he said. “They learn how to protect themselves. So, when you learn that, you’re going to build your self confidence. You’re going to have more respect for yourself … and people are going to notice that.”

The efforts to reach young children have grown in recent weeks as bullying has become a part of the national conversation.

The Houston ISD, for example, has taken a proactive approach by holding rallies at its campuses.

By Mike Capetillo

Texas Southern University becomes the first Historically Black University ever to receive its own channel on Comcast on Demand. The partnership is a great opportunity for students to experience hands-on training and create highly professional and entertaining programs. The channel will consist of various shows ranging from news and current events to sports, entertainment and cultural events on campus.

The specific show entitled “The Connect” is a student orientated MTV/CNN style entertainment program focusing on topics ranging from music, fashion, health, politics, current events and technology. Panel discussions will also be formatted into segments to stimulate intellectual discussions among college-aged students. The technology spotlight will focus on the great impact that technology plays on current life. The culture segments will focus on music, fashion, celebrity spotlight and upcoming events.

The show will also reach out to other Historically Black Colleges and Universities nationwide with a select “On The Road” segment. These segments will display campus life on other HBCU’s around the country.

Dr. James W. Ward, Dean of the School of Communications said that this is a step in the right direction for the university because TSU-TV will provide diverse programming to students and to the community.

“It is very exciting and we have been waiting for so long to partner with Comcast. We have programming for everyone from sports, public affairs to curtain cultural events on campus,” Ward said.

Texas Representative Garnet F. Coleman of District 147 was key in securing the deal between Texas Southern University and Comcast.

Coleman said the students have a great opportunity to learn with hands-on technology and gain valuable experience.

“I think it is very important because it will allow the public to see the values of Texas Southern University. It is a big move forward and hopefully this part will be a short period of time where it’s on demand and move straight forward to full broadcast television, which will be great,” Coleman said. “I think the students have a great opportunity to produce real programming that the public can see and it will bring forward some real good academic, informational programming to the public about various topics in our community. It also will be a place where the students can learn how to be broadcast journalists, as well as technicians over in the School of Communications,” Coleman added.

Preston Middleton, President of Next Wave Entertainment Universal Music Group, was also a huge help in securing the channel with Comcast.

“This is a very important step in the School of Communication moving forward to help the students get key broadcast experience. It is a wonderful opportunity for the students coming to the school to get experience like this on camera and get good content out to the public,” Middleton said. “I’m just very happy and I want to thank Representative Coleman for being so key in helping this come to pass,” Middleton added.

TSU President Dr. John Rudley believes the university is headed in the right direction.

“The fact that we can pull off a deal like this is an indication that Texas Southern is moving in the right direction. Having access to a Comcast channel is an asset, but we also have talented students on this campus, and that’s the real asset,” Rudley said. “We are going to make sure that we put the two together, and the Comcast deal is perfect for us and is a signal that Texas Southern is going to be heard by the community,” Rudley added.

City of Houston Mayor Annise Parker is thrilled about the collaboration between Texas Southern University and Comcast.

“Comcast is a great corporate citizen; they work really hard with us on PSA’s and providing important information to our citizens. This is a great opportunity to allow the students of Texas Southern University some real world, real time broadcast experience and I thank Comcast for doing it and I salute TSU for stepping up and getting out in front of everybody else,” Parker said.

Houston City Council Member Wanda Adams and alumnus of TSU said she is excited about the partnership with Comcast.

“I’m so happy for Texas Southern University in celebrating with their partnership with Comcast. I’ve been a proud alumnus of TSU and this partnership has made me even prouder,” said Adams. “They’re always providing great information out to the community and available resources that they have is one of the things I like about Comcast. The students at TSU will be able to take what they’re learning right now through Comcast and have more of a hands-on experience at looking at the different technologies that are available to them,” Adams added.

Senior broadcast journalism major Reagan Miller expressed feelings of fellow students when she said,

“Words cannot express how grateful we are for this opportunity. We are so grateful that you (Comcast) have given us the chance to prove ourselves. We are smart and we can overcome anything. Thank you for giving us a chance.”

The university is definitely headed in the right direction and Comcast is the perfect way to keep Texas Southern University moving forward.

TSU-TV is now available to Comcast customers.

For more information about TSU-TV on Comcast on Demand, follow them on Facebook at “The Connect on TSUTV,” and Twitter “TheConnect_TSU.”

The fatal shooting happened around 1:30 a.m. in the 3100 block of Springdale near Fallbrook, in the Silverlake community.

Anthony Williams, 36, was found dead in his kitchen and deputies said he was shot three times.

According to a person CLOSE to TI, the rapper legal team has tentatively agreed to accept 6 MONTHS JAIL TIME. In exchange, his wife and mother of his children, Tamkea “Tiny” Cottle will avoid ANY PUNISHMENT.

The insider explained, “TI wants to be certain that she will remain free to raise their children. That’s his number one priority. Over his career, and even over his freedom.”

We are not 100% with this information being that T.I. did violate his probation as a convicted felon with a felony possessions of weapon charge back in 2007. 6 months just seems a little to short when the original time someone could face for the weapons charge was up to 10 years. However, this would be a great look for Tiny because who would take care of all them kids? But you know TheBoxHouston.com will keep you informed because our ear is always in the streets!

Jack Hands served in Guam, Okinawa and Saipan during the war, so he’s seen his share of combat. But, everyone in his Houston neighborhood says he’s sweet and kind and known for his generosity.

But, when an intruder tried to get the best of him, he fought back.

It was late Tuesday night. What began as another act of generosity — loaning money to a man who knocked on his door — ended with gunfire.

The man outside grabbed Hands’ gun off the shelf and threatened to kill both Hands and himself.

“And pointed (it at me and said) ‘Mister Hands, I’m going to kill you and then I’m going to shoot myself,” he says.

But, Hands fought with the man, grabbed a shot gun and shot once, sending the suspect to the floor, dead.
