Tobe Nwigwe first turned heads with Get Twisted Sundays, his weekly freestyle series emanating from his living room floor. From there, it went to Sway In The Morning, then his first SXSW experience, then BET and then getting anointed by none other than Dave Chappelle and Erykah Badu. In Tobe’s eyes though, he never thought he’d be in this position.

Ahead of his first-ever solo show at White Oak Music Hall, Tobe, along with his wife Fat and producer Nell kicked it with Keisha Nicole for a bit of a therapy session as opposed to an interview as the foursome opened up about Tobe’s early dream of heading to the NFL after being a star linebacker at the University of North Texas, how injury and depression led him down the path of music, how he and Fat became one and so much more.

On His Achieving So Much So Soon:

“It’s been beautiful. I really thought I would dedicate 10 years to this. And if it wasn’t going to blow up like I thought it was then I was like, “Aight, cuz, it’s time to do something else.” For real, I had in my mind … I’ma do this every week for 10 years and in 10 years if it don’t pan out they way I thought it would and I don’t get the accolades and reached the people I wanted to reach then, “Aight, I gave it my best shot, I did something every single week for 10 years.”

On His Purpose:

“To make purpose popular. The accolades are cool but I feel we got a message for the masses, y’know?”
