The New York Yankees have announced that they are going to retire shortstop Derek Jeter’s No. 2 jersey.
The Yankees have said that Jeter’s jersey number is the last of their single digits jerseys to retire… and along with Jeter’s jersey, the Yankee have already retired twenty-one team jerseys.
Here is the list of previously retired Yankees retired jerseys:
- 1986 Bill Martin’s jersey No. 1
- 1948 Babe Ruth’s jersey No. 3
- 1939 Lou Gehrig’s jersey No. 4
- 1952 Joe DiMaggio’s jersey No. 5
- 2014 Joe Torre’s jersey No. 6
- 1969 Mickey Mantle ‘s jersey No. 7
- 1972 Yogi Berra and Bill Dickey’s jersey No. 8
- 1984 Roger Maris’ jersey No. 9
Jeter’s jersey is scheduled to be retired when they play the Houston Astros in New York on May 14th, and during the game they’re going to also honor him with a plaque that will unveiled too.
During his career, Derek Jeter set Yankee records for hits, games 2,747, at-bats 11,195, doubles 544 and stolen bases 358.
