R&B singer Abel Tesfaye, better known as The Weeknd, has donated $250,000 to the Black Lives Matter movement. The donation comes one week after he donated $50,000 to help fund a new Ethiopic Studies program at The University of Toronto.

Tesfaye has been vocal about social justice lately. Following the police killings of Alton Sterling and Philando Castile early last month, the “Earned It” star took to Twitter to express that “enough is enough.”

“it’s time to stand up for this,” he tweeted. we can either sit and watch, or do something about it. the time is now. #blacklivesmatter.”

Tesfaye joins a large group of celebrities who have recently spoken out. Last month, Alicia Keys brought together high-profile celebrities to address police brutality in a video titled, “23 Ways You Could Be Killed If You’re Black In America.” Jay Z released a song called “Spiritual” in response to the shootings in Louisiana and Minnesota. Beyoncé called for a moment of silence in Glasgow to acknowledge Black lives taken by U.S. police.

Drake, who is typically silent about such things, also posted a statement to Instagram.

It’s impossible to ignore that the relationship between black and brown communities and law enforcement remains as strained as it was decades ago,” he said. “No one begins their life as a hashtag. Yet the trend of being reduced to one continues.”
