Geneva Reed-Veal, mother of Sandra Bland, and family to worship at Hope A.M.E. Church in Prairie View, Texas.

Hope African Methodist Episcopal (A.M.E.) Church is pleased to welcome Mrs. Geneva Reed-Veal, mother of Sandra Bland, and other family members to worship service at Hope A.M.E. Church on Sunday, April 17, 2016 at 11:30AM (CST).

Reed-Veal and several others will be in Prairie View for the Sandra Bland Parkway Ceremony occurring on Friday, April 15, 2016 at 12:00PM (CST). The ceremony will take place right across from Hope A.M.E. Church, which is right at the spot of Sandra Bland’s stop and arrest by former Texas DPS Trooper Brian Encinia. After being stopped in front of Hope A.M.E. Church, Sandra was arrested and placed in the Waller County Jail. She was found hanged in her jail cell three days later.

This will mark the first time that the mother and family have been inside and worshipped in the church that sits at and overlooks the scene of the arrest. Pastor of Hope A.M.E. Church, the Rev. Sean J. Nickelberry claims “I can imagine that this will be an emotional and possibly hard time for this family. Every week I am reminded of the life of Sandra Bland and the tragic incident that lead to Sandra being placed in the Waller County Jail and ultimately being found dead. Every week when I turn off of Hwy 290 onto what is now Sandra Bland Parkway to come to Hope for Sunday service I visualize the whole incident and what happened. The makeshift memorial that now sits out in front of my church will forever be in my mind. It is also a constant reminder to this community. We will never forget what happened nor will we ever forget about the life of Sandra Bland.”

Sandra Bland was a member of DuPage A.M.E. Church in Lisle, IL. This worship service, as well as all others, is open to the public.
