KTRK reports…

People are petitioning HISD to change the name of schools named after Confederate War heroes. The question in HISD is being asked about schools named for Confederate War heroes. Do these names represent hate or heritage?  Last year, the district spent about $250,000 to change mascot names, like the then-named Lamar Washington Football Team, that were deemed offensive to the Native American Community.

The district hasn’t considered any formal proposals on the name change at this point. Board trustees meet again in August.

NAMES UNDER DISCUSSION…

Dowling Middle School: Named after Richard Dowling, a Confederate army officer.

Jackson Middle School: Named after Thomas “Stonewall” Jackson, a brigadier general in the Confederate army.

Johnston Middle School: Named after Albert Sidney Johnston, a Confederate army general.

Davis High School: Named after Jefferson Davis, president of the Confederate States of America.

Lee High School: Named after Robert E. Lee, the commander of the Confederate army.

Reagan High School: Named after John H. Reagan, postmaster general of the Confederacy.
