What’s up Houston? Yet another artist has dropped an album on us with no “heads up”. To Pimp A Butterfly, is Kendrick Lamar’s latest full length offering for the masses. Believe it or not, Taylor Swift’s tweet is what made me pay attention to the album leaking. The reviews have been either “all the way hot”, or “man K Dot has fell off”.
In all honesty, Kendrick’s core fan base probably appreciate his latest effort. If you’ve been following him since “Overly Dedicated” or “Section.80” you might get it. To his new fans who came after the radio success, you may be a little lost. Either way, you can’t discount his effect on our culture. People have even been comparing him to Tupac.
I don’t know if I’d take it that far. But they do have some similarities. They are both great lyricist and aren’t afraid to attack issues that affect Black America. They both have gained critical success for their body of work. Tho still building his body of work, Kendrick set a world record yesterday for Spotify streams. (According to theverge.com) So he’s doing something right. In a different time with new technological advances, could Kendrick be this generations “prophet”?
