A San Francisco station has some egg on their faces after an anchor reported on the alleged names of the pilots in last weekend’s Asiana Air plane crash in California.
The station, KTVU, reported the pilots of Asiana Flight 214 included “Captain Sum Ting Wong,” “Wi Tu Lo,” “Ho Lee Fuk,” and “Bang Ding Ow.” The station, after realizing their error, issued an apology and blamed the National Transportation Safety Board, according to Gawker:
EARLIER IN THE NEWSCAST WE GAVE SOME NAMES OF PILOTS INVOLVED IN THE ASIANA AIRLINES CRASH. THESE NAMES WERE NOT ACCURATE DESPITE AN N-T-S-B OFFICIAL IN WASHINGTON CONFIRMING THEM LATE THIS MORNING. WE APOLOGIZE FOR THIS ERROR.
Unfortunately for KTVU, the NTSB says the station didn’t get those names from them!
NTSB Public Affairs Officer Peter Knudson spoke with Gawker and said:
“I don’t know who [KTVU] got that from, but we do not release names,” he said.
