(London)  —  After allegations of “throwing” their matches, eight women’s badminton players have reportedly been disqualified from competition at the Olympics.  China’s world champion doubles pair Wang Xiaoli and Yu Yang, Indonesia’s Greysia Polii and Meiliana Jauhari, and South Korean pairs — Jung Kyung Eun and Kim Ha-na, and HA Jung-eun and Kim Min Jung — have all been dismissed from play according to multiple news outlets.  The doubles pairs were all charged with “not using one’s best efforts to win a match” and “conducting oneself in a manner that is clearly abusive or detrimental to the sport” by the World Badminton Federation.  Each team received a barrage of boos from the crowd in London when serve after serve went directly into the net and shots were placed well out of bounds.  The players are suspected of intentionally playing poorly in order to secure a more favorable matchup in the knockout rounds.
