It’s being hailed as a milestone.  The FDA the Food and Drug Administration approves the first drug shown to reduce the risk of HIV infection.

AIDS Foundation Houston says this medical breakthrough should really cut down on the number of new HIV cases.

The new drug, a pill called Truvada is a preventive measure for people who are at high risk of acquiring HIV because they have sex with HIV infected partners.

Nike Blue the director of prevention services at Aids Foundation Houston says “this is really going to be a game changer in the field of HIV prevention.”

Blue says this is a “game changer” because people who are in a loving relationship with someone who has HIV can now take Truvada and dramatically lessen the chance of contracting HIV.  She says “they will be able to take this medication to prevent them from getting hiv from their partner.”
