Frank Ocean, a 24-year-old singer and songwriter from New Orleans, Louisiana has been making news as a musical collaborator with  Justin Bieber, Jay-Z and Kanye West for some time. But recent news of his revealing his sexuality have many people wondering who he is. Here are a few facts we dug up to help you get familiar:

5. His original name was Christopher Breaux, but he changed it to Christopher Francis William Ocean in 2010 via a legal website. But his friends call him Lonny.

4. He Joined Odd Future in 2010. The first song he appeared on with them was Domo Genesis’ track, “SteamRoller.” But he started his career with producers Midi Mafia.

3. His first mix tape was released in February 2011 called Nostalgia, Ultra. He released two videos for the singles “Novacane” and “Swim Good.” The car on the cover is an orange 1988 BMW E30 M3.

2. Ocean once got into Twitter Beef With Chris Brown over a compliment. “I fuck with Frank Ocean. Reminds me of a young James Fauntleroy or Kevin Cossom” was read by Ocean as a backhanded compliment. Frank retaliated by comparing Brown to Ike Turner, another R&B star who battered his more famous partner. The beef is now over.

1. Ocean had a run-in with the police in 2011. While details are sketchy, Ocean tweeted “Fuck the LAPD” after writing “Just got out of jail.”

Frank Ocean’s debut album, Channel Orange, will be released on Def Jam records July 17th. You can see the tracklist and artwork HERE.
