The writer of the song, Joey Mazzarino, was inspired by his now 5-year-old adopted daughter Segi from Ethiopia. He noticed her playing with dolls and discovered that she wanted “to have long blond, straight hair.” Mazzarino is Italian.

The uplifting video went viral in hours, with mothers and daughters alike raving about the song, thankful after revealing they’d experienced a similar plight in one way or another.

Now, both adults and kids can profess their love for their hair across their chests with T-shirts developed by the company Mighty Fine.
