The fire broke out around 9:30am at the garage on San Felipe at Augusta. By 10:15am, firefighters called for three alarms, and by 10:35am, it was officially tapped out.

The black smoke pouring from the garage could be seen for miles. Firefighters say there were 10 to 12 cars on the 7th floor <>he parking garage that suffered fire damage. The fire started in one car and quickly spread to nearby vehicles.

Several workers told Eyewitness News that they could hear explosions. Just across the street from the parking garage is Rogers Middle School. HISD said those students were told to shelter-in-place. Students in that school are said to all be OK.

One person was in the garage when the fire started. He was doing detail work on a car. He said there was immediately black smoke. Firefighters helped escort him out of the garage.

“The next thing I know, we have very thick black smoke,” said worker Dana Mason. “We work at this end of the garage and the smoke was on the other side of the same floor I work on and it was so thick that you couldn’t see that floor at all.”

“How did you get out?” we asked.

“A fireman came up and told me that they evacuated that whole garage. Nobody had bothered to let me know. I work up there,” he replied.
