Lime Wire Shuts Down

After providing file sharers, bootleggers and music lovers free music and video downloads since the turn of the century, the popular file sharing service, Lime Wire has been forced to cease and desists

The company, Lime Wire LLC, which has been in a legal battle with the major labels including Arista, BMG, Sony, and Warner Bros was ordered by a federal judge to shut down on Tuesday, and was expected to have all versions of the software down as of Wednesday.

As mandated by the judge, Lime Wire must shut down, “the searching, downloading, uploading, file trading and/or file distribution functionality, and/or all functionality,” and would be required to implement a copyright filter in order to return to the web.

The problems do not end there for the company who provided free downloads for millions over the last decade. An RIAA spokesperson released a statement saying,

“In January, the court will conduct a trial to determine the appropriate level of damages necessary to compensate the record companies for the billions and billions of illegal downloads that occurred through the LimeWire system.”
